Random Thoughts: The Wedding Anxiety Edition

I’m kind of freaking out. And I’m not even the bride.

Next Wednesday — a week from today — we are planning on starting our eastward journey to Topsail Island, NC, for my little sister’s wedding.

I don’t feel ready.

I don’t feel ready, and I don’t know when crossing things off of my to-do list is going to make me feel ready.

I ordered Flora’s headpiece and basket, and had it shipped to Dr. Sis.
I reserved the rental car — a minivan, in point of fact — and Dan is set to pick it up next week. Canceled rental; we’re borrowing the IL’s Cadillac.

I still need to:
Write a toast.
Buy a tie that matches my dress for my groomsman.
Buy Flora shoes, and ship back the shoes I bought her that don’t fit.
Buy wraps/light jackets for the girls in case it’s chilly on the beach.
Buy foundation garments for me.
Write notes to Flora’s and Kate’s schools to excuse their absences.
Have my hair done.
(It was scheduled to be done last Sunday, but my stylist was ill.)
Have the girls’ hair cut.
Uh, pack for at least four people. (Theoretically, Dan will pack himself.) Figure out *what* I need to pack for Michael.
Email a shopping list for groceries to my parents.

I have a couple other anxieties about this whole thing.

For one, my eyes and contact lenses have not been compatible. Allergies seem to be making it blatantly impossible to wear my new soft contacts. Regardless of my eyedrops.

For two, my tooth. My new tooth.

It’s the wrong color.

And there’s nothing I can do about it.

The disappointment I feel about this is… keen. I mean, yes, it’s a first world problem and all, but after taking the leap to finally change the one single thing that made me horribly self-conscious, and being initially very, very excited about it, it’s very difficult to deal with the fact that all the money, discomfort, and, yes, even pain, DIDN’T pan out ultimately.

The tooth is a good looking tooth, but it’s darker toward the top. So, still wrong. It’s not AS BAD as it was, but it’s still not good.

I’m trying not to dwell. Nothing’s going to change, not before next Wednesday in any case. (No, whitening won’t work.)

Plus, you know, there’s that whole full-time work thing I got going on, and a few projects I’d like to get off my desk before we hit the open road.

Oh, AND, I need to buy leotards for the girls by SATURDAY because they started gymnastics this past Saturday — and they LOVE it — but I don’t feel like shelling out $30, each, at the class. Updated: My MIL found and bought leotards at KMart, $14.99! God bless that woman!

I need a personal assistant. And a tall margarita.

  1. Hey – breathe.

Notes regarding a few things on your list…
-The toast can be short or long, just be sincere and it’ll go over well.
    – Flora’s shoes… (can’t you technically still ship the others back AFTER the trip?)
    – Buy wraps/light jackets for the girls — they’ll have a Walmart there, right? Wait til you get there. Then you don’t have to remember to pack them, and if it’s not chilly, you don’t need to buy them at all. (Score!)
    – Packing for 4… I do the same thing anytime we’re packing to go someplace… the key is to take the essential stuff that you can’t replace or absolutely need… Note that most things that get packed are either unnecessary or could be re-bought someplace closer to your destination if the need arises.

    Did you breathe?
    =)

    Have a safe trip!!!

    • I have been practicing deep breathing and yoga to help. It has, a bit!

I CAN ship the others back after the trip. Good idea.

However, the wedding location is a little isolated, and we were encouraged to not get into the “I can run off to buy whatever I forgot” mentality. For example, the nearest grocery store is 45 minutes away. So there’s that.

Otherwise, I am really excited about the trip. It just snuck up on me!

  2. I know you can’t change the tooth thing before Wednesday but have you talked to the dentist to see if there is anything they can do after you get back?

Also, I have no kids Tuesday next week and so far a clear docket – is there anything I can knock out for you and drop at your place?

    • I have talked to the dentist, and he wants to take a look. But even he is not sure what the options are, aside from going through the whole process again. And: NO THANK YOU. To his credit, he’s bummed too!

Aren’t you a sweetheart? I think I can finish up by Sunday, and then pack Monday/Tuesday. If I need any thing, I’ll send up the mattie signal! πŸ˜‰

  3. I love this! I, too, will be packing soon for a wedding — both of my girls will be flower girls (I have 4 kids in total so 50% made the cut). I didn’t even THINK about haircuts for them. I still have not ordered shoes, or a headband, or stockings (bride insists on stockings). She doesn’t realize that my 19 month old is going to go ape-shit over stockings.

Can you order a double margarita and we can cyber-share? Or hell, let’s just put a card down and start a tab.

Good luck with everything. You’ll get through it. Focus on the toast, since that seems to be the thing that cannot be replaced/fixed if something goes wrong. Keep it simple, but thoughtful and from the heart. I’m sure you’ll do fine since you write from the heart all the time. Good luck to you.

    • I found headbands and baskets on Etsy, very pretty and very reasonable.

Boo to stockings! My sister is getting married on the beach, so we may not even need shoes for the ceremony. πŸ™‚

  4. I am so sorry about the tooth. The hygienist or the dentist I go to now (my previous dentist, the one who did my crown 20 years ago, moved to Johnston) suggested when the time comes that I replace my other front tooth so the two would match perfectly; and to look even better, he said to replace all four front teeth. That is crazy. Why would I give up perfectly good teeth?! Reading what you wrote makes me want to find my old dentist and make the trip. With all these advances and technology, why can’t they get it right?

I hope you are able to get done what you need to so you can enjoy that wedding. Fingers crossed for good-feeling contacts and items off your to-do list.

I recommend the Daily’s Pomegranate margarita box/cube. Unfortunately, my local state store has been sold out the last two times I was there, but maybe other places have it.
