Random Thoughts: Cranky Version II

I honestly wonder if there is an underlying problem.

Bun is sick again. Last week, she had no ear infection, and she was perfectly healthy when we left on Friday for a weekend out of town.

And now? Fever — over 100 for two days — coughing so hard she gags, congestion, and continuing constipation. Not eating well, not drinking well, not sleeping well.

I wonder if there is something that is making her vulnerable to every virus that comes along. I am seriously concerned, and I am not sure what to do.

When I called my pediatrician, I was told the cough could last for up to three weeks. To make her comfortable, I should run a humidifier in her room (done) and I could give her some OTC cough syrup like Delsym. If she runs a fever again today, I can take her to the office.

Yippee skippy.

I am thinking of taking her back to a chiropractor. And also of putting her on a dairy-free diet. I think that may help with the congestion and constipation.

I just don’t know what else to do. Surgery — ear tubes and/or an adenoidectomy — are only going to address the ear infections. Not that would be any small feat. But I don’t know if that’s going to stop the sick cycle.

I kind of doubt it.

Also, if someone could tell me where I put all the plastic eggs for Easter I would really appreciate it. We have about two dozen around this house somewhere, and if I have to run out at lunch tomorrow — especially if it’s during the wintry mix we’re supposed to be getting — someone is going to be very, very unhappy. Monkey is supposed to be doing an egg hunt at preschool on Thursday, and she can’t if she doesn’t have eggs.

I would like to put in for some spring. Thank you.

  1. Dairy-free might help with the congestion, since dairy does thicken our mucous production (gross but true).

However, I’d also suggest one of my favorite daily things: Stonyfield Farms yogurt. Organic and with the live active bacteria that are said to help boost the immune system.

Hang in there! It’s been a rough illness cycle for all of us.

  2. I kind of think it’s just been one of those years. All the kids at our daycare have been sick more than they were last year, especially with a cough that doesn’t seem to want to JUST DIE ALREADY.

Yeah, we’ve been fighting the cough, too. Nights at our house are just SO fun, what with the constant waking from coughing.
